Team USA to Take on the World in the 2015 AJC Peachtree Road Race

Peachtree Cup competition announced as lottery registration continues

ATLANTA – March 18, 2015 – Over the 45 year history of the AJC Peachtree Road Race, most of the world’s best known elite runners have raced down Peachtree Road chasing an individual title at the world’s largest 10K. In 2015, elites will again toe the starting line at Lenox and Peachtree – but this year they will also vie for international bragging rights as part of an elite team competition featuring an American team as it takes on three all-star teams from around the world. The American team will be an official U.S. team chosen by USA Track & Field and Atlanta Track Club. The announcement comes just days after online lottery registration opened for this year’s event.

The inaugural team competition, called the Peachtree Cup, will feature four teams; Team USA, Team Africa, Team Asia and Team Europe. Each team will consist of six athletes including three men and three women. All team members will start the AJC Peachtree Road Race at the same time. The team members’ individual finish times will be added together and the team with the fastest cumulative time will win the Peachtree Cup at the AJC Peachtree Road Race.

“The AJC Peachtree Road Race annually attracts top distance running talent from around the world,” said Rich Kenah, Atlanta Track Club’s executive director. “It seems fitting that we give participants, spectators and volunteers the opportunity to cheer on Team USA as well as all-star teams from around the world in the Peachtree Cup competition as we celebrate July 4th in Atlanta.”

The 2015 AJC Peachtree Road Race will have a total prize purse of $98,500, with $81,000 of that amount set aside for the team competition. The remaining prize money will be awarded to individuals in the men’s and women’s open and masters races.

The 46th running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race will take place on Saturday, July 4, 2015. Registration for the 2015 lottery began on Sunday, March 15 and will continue until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 22 at AJC.com/peachtree. The 2015 AJC Peachtree Road Race is capped at 60,000 entrants, making it the world’s largest 10K.
